Common reasons your phone doesn't ring

  • Do Not Disturb is on
  • A spam-blocker app is silencing the call (most common)
  • The caller's number is blocked
  • Your phone has weak or no signal
  • Call Forwarding is sending calls to voicemail
  • Battery Saver is dimming notifications
  • A bug in your Phone app

Quick checks

1. Turn off Do Not Disturb

Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb — make sure it's off. If you want to keep DND on, tap Exceptions and allow calls from "Everyone" or your contacts.

2. Unblock numbers you want to hear from

Open the Phone app three-dot menu → Settings → Blocked numbers — unblock anyone you want to receive calls from.

3. Check your signal

If you see No Service or Emergency Calls Only, see No service or "Emergency calls only" first.

4. Turn off Call Forwarding

Open Phone app three-dot menu → Settings → Calls → Call Forwarding — make sure it's off, unless you set it up on purpose. If your calls are going straight to voicemail, this is usually why.

Adjust your spam-blocker settings (most common fix)

Most modern Android phones have a built-in spam filter that can silently send calls to voicemail.

  1. Open the Phone app three-dot menu → Settings → Caller ID & spam.
  2. Turn off "Filter suspected spam calls."
  3. Keep "See caller & spam ID" on if you want warnings on incoming calls — this just labels them, doesn't block them.
  4. While you're there, open Blocked numbers and remove any legitimate numbers you didn't mean to block.

If you have a third-party spam blocker installed (Hiya, Call Control, etc.), open it and turn off auto-blocking, or add the people you missed to its allow list.

More things to try

Check for software updates

Settings → System → System update → Check for updates. Install and restart.

Clear your Phone app cache

Settings → Apps → Phone → Storage & cache → Clear cache.

Turn off Battery Saver

Settings → Battery → Battery Saver — off.

Safe Mode test (advanced)

If nothing above works, boot your phone in Safe Mode: hold the power button, then tap and hold Power off until you see a Safe Mode option. Try receiving a call. If it rings normally in Safe Mode, a recently installed app is the culprit — restart to exit Safe Mode and uninstall recently added apps one at a time until calls work.
